Plot Summary
The film begins with Rama's coronation as the king of Ayodhya after his return from Lanka. He rules the kingdom with justice and peace, along with his wife Sita and his brothers Lakshmana, Bharata and Shatrughna. However, one day he hears a washerman accusing Sita of being unfaithful to him during her captivity in Lanka. Rama is heartbroken by this allegation, but decides to send Sita to exile in order to uphold his duty as a king and a model for his subjects.
Sita is taken to the forest by Lakshmana, who leaves her near the ashram of sage Valmiki. There she gives birth to twin sons, Lava and Kusa. Valmiki takes care of them and teaches them the Ramayana, the epic story of their father's life. Lava and Kusa grow up as brave and skilled warriors, unaware of their true identity.
Meanwhile, Rama decides to perform the Ashwamedha Yagna, a horse sacrifice ritual to assert his sovereignty over the world. He sends his horse across the lands, accompanied by his army led by Shatrughna. Whoever stops the horse has to challenge Rama's authority and fight with his army.
The horse reaches the forest where Lava and Kusa live. They capture the horse and tie it to a tree, declaring their challenge to Rama. Shatrughna tries to free the horse, but is defeated by Lava and Kusa in a fierce battle. He returns to Ayodhya and informs Rama about the incident.
Rama sends Lakshmana to negotiate with the boys and bring back the horse peacefully. Lakshmana meets Lava and Kusa, and is impressed by their courage and intelligence. He tries to persuade them to release the horse, but they refuse unless Rama himself comes to fight with them.
Lakshmana returns to Ayodhya and tells Rama about his encounter with Lava and Kusa. He also praises their resemblance to Rama in appearance and character. Rama feels a strange connection with them, but decides to go to the forest with his army to face them.
Rama arrives at the forest and sees Lava and Kusa guarding the horse. He asks them who they are and why they are opposing him. They reply that they are the sons of Sita, who was abandoned by Rama unjustly. They also recite the Ramayana to him, narrating his deeds and misdeeds.
Rama is stunned by their words and realizes that they are his own sons. He tries to embrace them, but they reject him as their father. They challenge him to a duel for their mother's honor.
Rama accepts their challenge and fights with them using his divine bow Sharanga. However, Lava and Kusa counter his attacks with their own divine bows, which were given to them by Valmiki. The battle becomes intense and destructive, causing havoc in the forest.
Valmiki intervenes and stops the fight. He reveals to Rama that Lava and Kusa are his sons, and that Sita is still alive and pure. He also tells him that this was all a divine plan to test his devotion and virtue.
Rama is overjoyed and apologizes to Lava and Kusa for his mistake. He embraces them and takes them to his chariot. He then proceeds to Valmiki's ashram, where he meets Sita.
Sita is happy to see Rama and their sons, but she is also hurt by his distrust and rejection. She asks him to prove her innocence in front of the world, as he did before by making her undergo the fire ordeal. Rama agrees and asks her to swear by the earth, her mother, that she was faithful to him.
Sita swears by the earth and prays to her mother to take her back if she was true. The earth opens up and a divine throne emerges from it. Sita sits on the throne and is taken back to the earth, leaving Rama and everyone else in shock and sorrow.
Rama laments for Sita and decides to end his life. However, he is stopped by the gods, who appear in the sky. They tell him that he has completed his mission as an avatar of Vishnu, and that he should return to his abode in Vaikuntha. They also tell him that Sita was an avatar of Lakshmi, and that she will join him soon.
Rama agrees and bids farewell to his sons, brothers and subjects. He entrusts the kingdom to Lava and Kusa, and ascends to heaven with his chariot. The film ends with a message that Rama and Sita will always live in the hearts of their devotees.
